North Gibson Youth Coalition

Mission Statement

The mission of the North Gibson Youth Coalition is to develop and
implement a comprehensive school and community plan that will provide
a positive, disciplined, and motivational environment for the
development of our community's youth.

Anyone wishing to be involved in the youth coalition can call Karen
Davis at Princeton Community High School or Dede Russell at Princeton
Community Middle School.

Purpose Statement

The purposes of the North Gibson Youth Coalition will be

· To engage and unite schools, families, businesses, and youth-serving organizations in the community to provide sustained guidance to young people.

· To provide youth the opportunity to interact with and have access to successful school officials, youth leaders, and  business people. The young people will see that these members of the community  demonstrate and stress the core values of integrity, goal-setting, loyalty, honesty,  responsibility, respect, accountability, discipline, self-motivation, and hard work  academically, in extracurricular school and community activities, and at work in order to achieve their goals.

· To promote school and community efforts that expand young people's horizons, encourage their potential, nurture their self-confidence, and promote plans and desires for their future.

· To develop relationships and services that help young people see and believe that a variety of options are available for them both while they are in school and after graduation. Those would include academic and personal skills that would help them to arrive at the twelfth grade with a wide range of educational and vocational options open to them.

· To promote school and community efforts that increase students' motivation to stay in school, participate in school and community activities, to achieve at higher levels by raising their individual standards, to graduate, and to choose positive and productive directions for the future.

Working together to achieve these goals will show members of our community the worth of our young people and will show our young people throughout the continuum of their school years that they are important to and supported by the entire community.

History

History: North Gibson Youth Coalition began in 1988 with a one-year
planning grant from Lilly Endowment. The following year the group was
named the recipient of the first of two three-year grants, each worth
$150,000. With the grants the first transition camps and other
programs were established.

The coalition still conducts three-day, two-night camps every spring
for fifth and eighth grade students in the North Gibson School
Corporation. Those camps are complimented by a revised mentorship
program, college visits for middle and high school students, and the
reality store for eighth graders.

During the 2003-4 school year, the coalition reorganized its board
and rewrote its by-laws. Part of the by-laws include the following:

Preparing our youth for the challenges of tomorrow with
guidance and direction today, anchored with the heritage, values, and
principles of the founding of our nation.
