James B. Gamble |
James B. Gamble, one of the best-known attorneys in Southern Indiana, was elected for two, two-year terms as Mayor of Princeton. James Gamble was first elected as the third Mayor of Princeton for a term of two years from 1888-1890 and then was
re-elected as the fifth Mayor from 1894-1898.
James Gamble was the son of Robert and Nancy (Crowder) Gamble. James was born in Carmi, Illinois, on December 19, 1853. James's mother died when he was six years old and he lost his father later in the Civil War. Mr. Gamble attended High School at Fort Branch and desired to be a schoolteacher. James taught in Gibson County schools for five years before he began studying law under Judge Land, as did many young aspiring attorneys.
He was admitted to the bar in 1877, and immediately formed a partnership with Judge Land. James later married the Judge's daughter Naomi J. Land and they had three children.
James Gamble became interested in politics early on, he identified with the Republican Party. In 1900 he was appointed as a Special United States Revenue Agent, a position held until
1906. During most of this time James Gamble resided in Richmond, Virginia.
