Mayor Henry P. Chambers 1898-1902

 Henry P. Chambers

Henry P. Chambers was Princeton's sixth Mayor after being elected to office in 1898. He was a Republican and served a four year term.

Henry P. Chambers, son of Henry P. Chambers Sr. and Catherine (Puterbaugh) Chambers, was born August 3, 1839 in Miami County Ohio. Henry was raised on the family farm and learned the carpenter trade. In September 1861 Henry enlisted in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Henry Chambers received his first baptism of war in the battle of Shiloh where his company suffered enormous losses. Henry was among the wounded as he had been shot in the shoulder and was hospitalized for four months.

Henry Chambers went on to fight in twenty-seven battles and was again wounded at the battle of Resaca, Ga. Henry married Miss Miranda (Solomon) in 1860 and mustered out of the Fourth Army Corp. in September 1864.

After leaving the army Miranda and Henry returned to St. Paris and then to Springfield, Ohio where he retuned to his chosen trade of carpentering. They moved to just west of Indianapolis, Indiana and in 1866 bought a farm near Patoka in Gibson County and continued his trade as a carpenter until 1872. In 1882 Henry took up the trade of saw milling and continued working at the saw mill until he was nominated by the Republican Party and elected Sheriff in 1880 and re-elected to the office to a second two-year term in 1882.

Henry Chambers retired to private life and in 1885 moved his family to Harper, Kansas where he resided until 1888. He then returned to Princeton and formed a partnership with George W. Shopbell as contracting carpenters. Chambers was a General Contractor for the Air Line Railroad, now known as the Southern Shops. In 1898 Henry Chambers was elected Mayor and held that office for four years. He died on October 12, 1903.
