Robert A. Cushman
Dr. Robert A.
Cushman became the youngest person ever to be elected as Mayor of the city
of Princeton in 1906 when he was elected to be the 10th Mayor
of Princeton at the age of 30.
Robert was a
life long native of Gibson County, having been born in Princeton, the sixth
of seven children to Rev. R. L. and Elizabeth “Davis”
Cushman. Robert was born on March 2, 1876 in what was known as the old
Embree home on south Hall Street.
Robert’s
interest in athletics was well known and while attending Princeton High
School in 1895 he organized and captained the first football team at
Princeton. Robert went on to the University of DePaul and distinguished
himself as a half back on a winning DePaul football team.
Cushman
attended DePaul Medical School two years and later graduated form Indiana
Medical College in 1902.
Dr.
Robert Cushman immediately returned to Princeton and in May 1902 began his
medical practice. In June of that same year Robert married Miss Alice
Carry “Schwin”.
Politically,
Dr. Cushman was an active member of the Democratic Party. Cushman served
as Mayor from 1906 to 1910. In 1912 he was a delegate to the Democratic
national convention in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Cushman also served on the county
council until his resignation due to illness.
Dr.
Cushman served in World War I as captain in the medical corps for the 29th
field artillery.
Dr.
Cushman died at a young age of 51 after a long illness. Dr. Cushman
continued his medical practice until his death.
