Doris R. Head was Princeton’s twelfth Mayor. Head was elected in November 1913 and took office in January 1914.
Doris Head was born in Princeton to Cornelius F. and Mary (Brown) Head on April 17, 1871. Cornelius Head came to Princeton from Kentucky and opened a mercantile business with Charles Brownlee under the name of Head and Brownlee & Company.
Doris Head’s mother died when he was 7 weeks old and his father died when he was about 4 years old.
According to guardianship and census records, his grandmother, Mary
Brownlee, raised him.
Head was educated in public schools of Gibson County and graduated from Princeton High School. For many years,
Head was in the brokerage business in Princeton and then was appointed to one term as Deputy Sheriff.
On November 11, 1908 Doris Head married May Duncan Harten, the daughter of Joseph C. and Jessie (Kerr)
Harten.
Head was admitted to the practice of law in March of 1913, and practiced law in Princeton for several years. Head had been active in the Democrat party for years when he was nominated and later elected Mayor of Princeton.
