Walter G. Cox became Princeton's twenty-first Mayor in 1948. Almost from his first day in office, Mayor Cox's health began to
decline; but being the public servant that he was, he continued to carry out the duties of his office despite the pleas of his family and friends to take time off for rest and treatment. Mayor Cox made an honest effort to carry out his doctor's orders to slow down, but he found it hard to do. He could not always say no when his services were
needed. Mayor Cox succumbed to his poor health on June 7, 1950.
