Mayor Vernor Woodruff 1950-1956

 

M. Vernor "Vern" Woodruff

Following the death of Mayor Walter Cox, Democrat City Councilman M. Vernor "Vern" Woodruff was appointed to fill the unexpired term to become the City's twenty-second Mayor. 

Woodruff would run in the 1951 election for Mayor of Princeton and would narrowly defeat Republican Lennis D. Kendle by 159 votes. Mayor Woodruff did not run for re-election in 1955.

Woodruff was born on January 21, 1906 to Theron and Effie "Weltz" Woodruff in Lawrence County Illinois and would reside in Princeton most of his life. He married Florence Songer. Woodruff was a poultry dealer in Princeton and eventually retired from Woodruff Brothers Incorporated. 

Woodruff was a strong Democratic leader and was a Democratic County Chairman, and was a County Health Officer in the 70's. 

Woodruff was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge, York and Scottish Rite, Swords of Bunker Hill, Hadi Shrine Temple, Eagles, and the Elks.
