Kruger Oxidation Ditch Weirs and Gates
The Kruger Oxidation Ditches contain a
total of 18 weirs and sluice gates which include several different types.
They are located in the Influent Mixing tanks, the Influent and Effluent
Distributors and the Effluent discharge end of the ditches.
They control the Raw
Sewage and Clarifier RAS Return flow into or around the Influent Mixing
Tanks, the Influent Inlet to Ditch 1 or Ditch 2 depending on the operating
cycle, the Effluent from Ditch 1 or Ditch 2 depending on the operating cycle
and the Effluent discharge to either Clarifier 1 or Clarifier 2 depending on
the operating cycle. |

| Gates 1, 2 and 3 shown in
the illustration above are normally open, manually operated Sluice Gates
which allow RAS Return from the Clarifiers into Tank 1 of the Influent
Mixing Tanks, Raw Sewage into Tank 2 and the discharge from Tank 3 to the
channel under the grating leading to the Ditch Influent Distributor.
Gates 4, 5 and 6 are normally closed,
manually operated fibreglass gates, which slide open or closed. These gates
are opened to allow a flow path for Raw Sewage and Clarifier RAS Return
around the Influent Mixing Tanks, along the channel under the grating
leading to the Ditch Influent Distributor, when the tanks are isolated for
cleaning and maintenance by the closing of Gates 1, 2 and 3.
The Influent Weirs in the Influent
Distributor allow the flow of Raw Sewage and Clarifier RAS Return into
either Ditch 1 or Ditch 2 depending on the operating cycle. |

| The Influent and
Effluent
Weirs located in the Ditch Influent and Effluent Distributors are part of
the Kruger Ditch System design and are motor operated Weirs. They are
connected to the Kruger SCADA System and are raised or lowered (opened or
closed) as required depending on the plant operating cycle. There is a
manual over-ride provided if required. |

| At the Effluent end of
the ditches, there are 2 RAS Wells, one for each ditch located in the outer
corner of each ditch and an Effluent Distributor.
The Effluent Distributor accepts Effluent
from either Ditch 1 or Ditch 2 depending on the plant operating cycle via
the respective Effluent Weir, then allows the flow of the Effluent to either
Primary Clarifier 1 or Primary Clarifier 2 via their respective sluice
gates.
The RAS Wells contain 3 gates each, the
first set connects the 2 RAS Wells so the pumps in one can be used for the
other as a backup, the second set allows for the draining of the respective
ditch and the third set allows the RAS return flow from its respective
clarifier, 1 or 2. There is also a gravity feed WAS line from each clarifier
to a WAS pump which pumps the WAS back to the Belt Thickener in the
Biosolids Building. RAS pumps pump the RAS from the respective
clarifiers
back to the Influent end of the Ditches. |

| In the illustration
above, gates 7 and 8 allow flow from the Effluent Distributor to either
Clarifier 1 or Clarifier 2, gates 9 and 10 allow for the draining of the
respective ditch, gates 11 and 12 allow the RAS return flow from Clarifier 1
and Clarifier 2 and gates 13 and 14 allow the cross connection of the RAS
Wells so the pumps in one well can be used by the other as a backup. |
